Semur-en-AuxoisSnippets, corners, gardens and ancient walls. I am not sure where this week has gone, I hope you have had a good one?! It is almost Friday and finally I have gathered together some more pictures from our magical five days in Burgundy. Despite the rain, we found beauty everywhere.Flavigny-sur-OzerainFlavigny-sur-OzerainDon’t you think all post boxes should look like this? I was swooning about all over the region as we dived in and out of the car to visit towns, take photos, stop for lunch and all the while trying to stay dry. Up to my peeping tom tricks again, I loved looking through the windows to see what things people choose to surround themselves with.Abbaye de FontenayAbbaye de Fontenay was a magical surprise – on our one dry day, we walked the grounds, buildings and ruins. Trees planted in the 1700’s and much earlier were the crown jewels in this – the oldest preserved Cistercian abbey in the world.Abbaye de FontenayPeachy blooms climbed the walls and dreamy Juliet balconies were everywhere. Decay seemed decorative and the scale of the place was magnificent.Abbaye de FontenayAbbaye de FontenayAbbaye de FontenayThe lawns were immaculate – kept so by this fellow above. Behind the scenes, I was glad to also discover some untouched areas with wild grass and toadflax scrambling up steps. The whole place had such a sense of calm and history.Abbaye de FontenayAbbaye de FontenaySandy stones and lush greenery with flowing pools of water and waterfalls for a soundtrack, we wandered for an hour or two through the huge halls, small arches and a chapel that took our breath away.Abbaye de FontenayAbbaye de FontenayFlavigny-sur-OzerainThen back to Flavigny-sur-Ozerain for one last wander. Hidden buildings in the hills had mystical stone carvings hidden in their mossy walls and we made friends with a few more cats before it was time to go home.Flavigny-sur-OzerainFrench cat! Flavigny-sur-OzerainFrench cat! It was hard to leave his one behind as she followed us around the winding streets. Irises were the other flowers we saw everywhere, tall spikes of lilac, blue, deep purple and peach. I am so missing this place already. I don’t normally suffer from post-holiday blues but this was such an enchanting place, I cannot wait to return. Being completely cut off from my phone, the internet and the outside world, it was quite hard to return to the real world!Iris garden terraceHave a lovely Friday and weekend – we are off to help out at a retreat held by the lovely Natasha on Saturday and then to Dungeness on Sunday. Fun filled days hopefully – fingers crossed for sunshine! xAlpine wall
