In celebration of Wool Week – I have spent the last couple of evenings really getting into autumn, swishing around the house in this beautiful 100% Gotland blanket from Urbanara and making a little IG post for them. My favourite thing to do with a blanket is to snuggle up with a cat, usually Marlo (and Dean). Both our cats love real fibres (refusing to sleep on anything else! They are a little spoilt I know, but as they are basically the children in our home, I welcome them to share my best/new throws whenever I put one out on the bed or a chair!
My sisters and I grew up in a woollen household – my mum is an expert spinner, dyer and an amazing knitter. Mum also gives demos showing the stages and processes of turning a fleece from its raw state into an item of knitwear – it is amazing to see, such a lot of work and skill. I do like to keep her busy from time to time with knit requests, although my new nephew has been taking up all the knitting time this last year!
As you can tell it is something I am very passionate about and interested in, and something we champion in our own online store too. Marlo has embraced the campaign with so much gusto that she’s crashed out on our bed again in her luxury nest of 100% pure Scandinavian wool. I am hoping she will budge over just enough to let me get underneath to warm my toes!
Hopefully, this beautiful and versatile natural fibre will be celebrated more and more each year. Oil-based synthetic fibres still dominate in the stores, but as people become more environmentally aware and the price of oil rises, the potential growth for this natural fibre industry is enormous. There is still a way to go and promoting wool as the natural, renewable and biodegradable alternative to synthetic fibres remains as important as ever! So I hope you’ll consider wool the next time you are on the hunt for a cosy layer, it is the best after all. love your gold frame bedside table where is it from?
Hey Rachael – the lamp? It was from http://www.westelm.co.uk/ and the table was a rescue job from a junk shop! :)
