Fancy running off to a Cinque Port town for the weekend? Here are my favourite spots in the next town over from where we live – Rye. As you know, I am always popping over there for an hour or two, on my own on a mission to find some rustic treasure for our home. Sometimes with Dean to meet friends for an afternoon drink or a lovely meal every now and then in the evenings.
I shot these images for Reclaim Magazine back at the end of last year for a travel feature. It looks a bit autumnal but quite fitting for this weeks weather I thought.
It’s the sweetest town with so much mystery and history. Winding cobbled streets with independent shops, cafes and pubs. Surrounded by beaches at Camber Sands and the beautiful wild and windswept nature reserve too. Plus this lovely National Trust Property.
A handful of my favourite places to eat – Simon the Pieman, The Cobbles Tea Room, Edith’s, The Standard, The Globe Inn Marsh, Fig Cafe, The Mermaid Street Cafe and Apothecary Cafe. You might also want to see what all the fuss is about and try the hot chocolate at Knoops.
Grab a pretty hand drawn town map in most shops and walk the entire town from top – (I’m up on the church tower in the pic above) to the bottom (station). From secret alleyways and steps to winding streets and the strand.
Shop in McCully & Crane, Rye Cook Shop, Cosy Dot Company, Rye Pottery, all the antique and junk shops on the Strand Quay.
Stay – The Standard, The george, The Mermaid Inn or Airbnb – Rosaleen or treat yourself and some friends and stay in this converted St Johns Ambulance Station.
Wander down to the fishing fleet for fresh shellfish and a view of the town from the outskirts.
Be sure to remember to grab a slice of Guinness cake from Edith’s House for your journey home. Happy travels, maybe I’ll bump into you there one day soon? x
What a pretty little town!
It is a real gem! :)
Wow! How gorgeous is Rye?! I will put it on my list of Places to Visit When My Legs Work Properly Again. I’d eat and drink until bursting and buy enough things to start my own shop. The semi-nude man painting in the first photo is awesome…
Yes! All the things I do when there! You’d love it there hehe :)
I love Rye and really enjoy visiting it. Last time I went I had a Lavender Hot Chocolate at Knoops and it was so so good. I even had lavender shortbread with it! Equally good.
